I was recently approached by Prof. Charles Parry of the MRC Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Unit to participate in a survey on alcohol policy development and implementation in South Africa.  Responses were received from 37 persons deemed to have expertise in alcohol policy in South Africa out of a possible 52 approached.

Acudetox Centre South Africa was started by Warren Whitfield in 2006. After travelling to New York to study acupuncture for treating addiction, Warren Whitfield became qualified as an Auricular Detoxification Specialist Trainer.

He completed his training at Lincoln Memorial Hospital Recovery Centre in South Bronx New York, the original clinic that pioneered the 5 point NADA Acudetox protocol. The Addiction Action Campaign, a formidable  public advocacy group which represents the rights of all South Africans on the issue of addiction and substance abuse, and he is the founder and Chairperson of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association of South Africa (NADA S.A.)

There are two reputable addiction counselling training centres that I am aware of in South Africa which offer addiction counselling courses.

The first is offered by Houghton House in Johannesburg which offers courses in modules. Each module takes a few months of Monday evenings aand the trainers are internationally certified in teaching addiction counselling. After completeing a module, credits are earned and after all of the modules are completed, along with practical hours completed, students become qualified as addiction counsellors. There is another option which is very worthwhile, and that is to become an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist (Acudetox). Acudetox is by far the best addiction detoxification method in the world. It was developed by NADA in the USA. There are over 1500 addiction treatment centres worldwide that use Acudetox now, with over 25000 trained specialists as well.
